Subject: [Zip] Usage of Localizer: locale in URL
Message-ID:
In this msg, and in the following, a couple of tiny experiences that we have=
had using this tool, Localizer (http://sourceforge.net/projects/lleu)
We have redesigned our company site with it. 3 language versions working,=
with different content in each language, distributed in different folders.
Advantages: we provide a single URL, and Zope gives the user the content in=
his/her language of choice as in
http://www.codesyntax.com/Contact
But, at the sime time, as Localizer also permits locale visualization in the=
URL, we can provide direct URL to a given version... This was important for=
us. We wanted our site to be spidered by Google, and we had an important=
doubt: what would Google list for www.codesyntax.com/Contact ?? Would it=
list it as a Spanish, Basque or English page? And in case it listed it as=
English, what about the other versions? They would not be spidered and sear=
chable?
So, we use the locales in the URL to give Google a hint...
At the bottom of every page, like in http://www.codesyntax.com/Contact there=
are a couple of invisible links to the other language versions: http://www.=
codesyntax.com/eu/Contact and http://www.codesyntax.com/es/Contact . It=B4s=
a silly trick, but Google gets it, and it also parses the contect of those=
pages, and, by the way, it spiders the whole content of codesyntax.com in 3=
languages, as we can see at:
http://www.google.com/search?q=3Dcodesyntax

Subject: [Zip] Usage of Localizer: multilingual product
Message-ID:
We just released a product. Well, not really a product, but just a folder=
with a python extension behind written in quite ugly and clumsy code...=
However, it is a useful tool, we believe. It=B4s the zOpen Directory (http:=
//www.zope.org/Members/CodeSyntax/zOpenDirectory)
zOpen Directory uses two other Zope products: the PathHandler and Localizer.=
Particularly, thanks to Localizer, we have released this first version=
already in the following languages: English, Basque, Spanish, French,=
Dutch, Catalan, German and Italian.
In this case, it=B4s the Localized Strings feature of Localizer what is used=
mostly. zOpen Directory is just a parser of remote content, the Open=
Directory Project, that let=B4s you integrate a whole searchable WWW=
directory (as a matter of fact the very same directory that Google uses) in=
any Zope website. So, you don=B4t care about content management with this t=
ool.
But, using Localizer, you can have easy control over interface messages.=
Being a search engine, there are no so many interface strings. So, it=B4s=
quite easy to translate the whole interface... As a matter of fact, we=
created a Dutch interface without knowing any Ducth, just copying strings=
from the original Dutch version of ODP. However, there were some strings=
that we could not guess and they are "empty" at our tool.
So, the string that appears as "Regarding this Category" in the English=
interface at the top of every page (http://www.codesyntax.com/zOpenDirector=
y/en/Top/Computers/) is just 'zCat' in the http://www.codesyntax.com/zOpenDi=
rectory/nl/Top/Computers/ Dutch version, being 'zCat' the text in the=
gettext variable of the DTML method.
The localized versions differ also in the searching options. Each language=
version has a different entry page, and a particular searching option=
adapted to each language. In this case, this was a feature that I think=
improves the ODP interface as present at Dmoz.org or even at directory.goog=
le.com.
Being a fan and heavy user of ODP, for me it was kind of frustrating when=
you were in a given category like, for instance, http://dmoz.org/World/Espa=
%f1ol/Salud/Medicina/ and your searching options were just two, restricted=
to that category, or the whole ODP. You cannot perform a Spanish-only=
search in ODP or in the directory version of Google whenever you want. You=
can only do that from the World/Espa%f1ol page, and from nowhere else.=
That=B4s why I changed the searching options and buttons for this tool...=
and I could do that thanks to Localizer.

Subject: [Zip] ZBabel 2.0.0 beta 1 released
Message-ID: <5.1.0.14.2.20010919200900.00ad0378@mail.cbu.edu>
Hello everyone,
I am very pleased to announce The Zope Babel Translation System 2.0.0 beta
1. It has been a while that I made a release, but I finally got around it
and made some of the annoying bug fixes.
URL: http://www.zope.org/Members/srichter/Products/ZBabel (my Zope Site)
URL: http://demo.iuveno-net.de/iuveno/Products/ZBabel (iuveno's Demo Site)
Some of the new "features" in this release include:
- Made ZBabel Zope 2.4 & Python 2.1 compatible by replacing regex
with re and fixing a bug in the tag code.
- Finally added support, so that an attribute in any tag of the kind
name='value' is interpreted as name having a string (and not an expression)
as value.
- Made the 'SQL Methods' and 'Init Tables/Views' Zope GUI 2.3+ compatible.
- Added a management screen (not available over a tab) that allows to edit
long phrases by providing textareas. You can get to this screen by
clicking on the label of the phrase. When you press "Edit", then you will
be brought back to the regular translation screen.
Please feel free to send me any comments and criticism to srichter@cbu.edu.
Regards,
Stephan

Hi!
I'd like to ask you to collect some ideas about how a Zope Page Template
(TAL) internationalization syntax could look like ...

Subject: [Zip] Localizer 0.6.0 released
Message-ID: <20010925135301.0EE55EFB@nuvol.uji.es>
Hi all,
The new version of Localizer (0.6.0) is already in SF for download:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/lleu
It has lots of changes, here is a list of some of them (look at
CHANGES.txt for a more complete list):
- Now LocalPropertyManager can be used as a base class for ZClasses.
Though I haven't tested it too much, and there isn't documentation
nor examples.
- Now it's possible to add/remove languages in LocalPropertyManager
based objects.
This means that in the same web site you can have web pages in
different set of languages. For example, most content in
"lleu.uji.es" is in spanish and catalan, but there're some pages
in spanish, catalan and english. The selection box that allows
to change the language shows which languages are available in
the page.
- Now LocalContent also inherits from PropertyManager, so it can
store both local and normal properties.
- Now it's possible to export/import message catalogs in the database
to/from .po files.
Also several bugs have been fixed, the most important is one that broke
gettext(...) when virtual hosting was used.
Please, if you already use Localizer read the UPGRADE.txt file before
upgrading. If there's any problem or question ask me.
Regards,
jdavid
