Consistency can be nice, but in this case I dont see it. We already have some
things controlled by environment variables, some by
INSTANCE_HOME/magic_name.py scripts, and now something uses a long option
too.
I can see the argument being different if this was a switch that everyone
would use sooner or later, but ICP seems likely to remain a minority interest.

Indeed. Half serious proposal: What about if we added new long option that
shadow all the current short ones? I would be happy to type those extra
characters on the rare occasions where I write a new start script, in
exchange for the extra readability on the many times I read a old one.

There arent very many of them at the moment, so I think we can debate this
principal without worrying about that kind of practicality

Not if the option requires a parameter, which this one does.
