Issue resolved by adding management_page_charset = "8859-2". Thank you for the hint!
It would be beneficial if the management_page_charset hack was included in Zope Book and INSTALL.txt.
Last question: Can I compile python with Unicode support even if the underlying system is not Unicode (Mandrake 9.0)? If I do, can I remove the management_page_charset hack and still allow people with MSIE 6 submit data in Win-1250 AND Unicode?

Good. You almost certainly dont need it.

I cant reproduce it here. You could try debugging it yourself - it is all handled in OFS/dtml/properties.dtml.
Alternatively send me the html source for the problematic page, preferably retrieved using wget not a gui browser, and I may be able to deduce the problem.

I never heard about management_page_charset property before. Consequently, I did not set it. I experienced issue 792 with vanilla Zope 2.6.1 beta 2.

2.6.1 will inhibit the unicode property option if you have set a management_page_charset property. This property is a transitional tool for users who were previously storing non-latin1 text in 8 bit string properties.

I can not reproduce this unless this property is defined. Please confirm if this applies to your, or provide more details if it does not.

ZClass property sheets allow text and utext, string and ustring (presumably a Unicode text and Unicode string?). However, DTML document properties (in ZMI) only allow text and string, but not the utext and ustring.
