Leave the ivory tower now!

Dear friends. A few days ago the Ruby on Rails development team published the 1.0 release. At that occasion the Zope fans are reminded how far Zope fell far behind in terms of attention and recognized widespread. Python has batteries included. Zope is a power plant. But still everyone speaks of Django, Turbogears or Ruby on Rails. Even if they talk about the shortcommings of J2EE. Some of the best content management systems are build using Zope 2. CPS, ZMS and my favourite: Plone. And Typo3 gets even more attention. Why? Because we failed. We aren't marketing Zope at all. Have a look at zope.org. Do you think, that any CEO will stay at that site more than 10 seconds? Have a look at rubyonrails.org and cry. Zope 3.2 will be delivered soon. Have any look at zope.org where is You got it. To a certain extent Zope 2 was attracting like a nuclear power plant. Whenever I start programming with Zope 2, latest for Plone, I can feel its power before even diving into it much, but I'm alarmed of its pitfalls at the very same time. So all my hopes are with Zope 3 which enabled me without hurting me yet. Will I get a truly powerful replacement for J2EE? Here are my ideas to make Zope 3 the most successful framework ever: Make them love Zope at the very first look: * Make installing Zope a double-click or one-command-only experience and * offer a 30 minutes tutorial of programming an useful application including an audiovisual show for an appetizer that offers a feeling of success. Bribe the managers: * Include Microsoft SQL-Server and Oracle relational database access. * Include powerful XML processing facilities and * include everything necessary and useful to build or use web services. Enable the beginners: * Easy to read and understand but still complete and current documentation is a must. * Avoid cluttering everything about Zope across articles, blogs, chats, mailing lists and wikis. Keep everything available and searchable at one central location. Remember: The power of Ruby on Rails doesn't come from either Ruby or the framework but from its community. Zope, Apache, REMOTE_USER

I'm using Apache 2.0, and I cannot find a solution to passing the value of REMOTE_USER from Apache to Zope when using a rewrite rule. I have Apache rewriting requests for Zope, and hooked into Tomcat with mod_jk. My users login through a servlet, and Apache has REMOTE_USER available to it. But any subsequent request to Zope loses this value. I used to have this all working when using FastCGI, but I'm hoping to use only mod_rewrite. Is it possible? Thanks, Rob

Javascript obfuscator and Zope

Hi list, I am wondering if anyone is obfuscating JavaScript using a python script or product. I did some googling but nothing cropped up. Seems like a nice idea unless the realities of javascript obfuscation make the exercise pointless. Any thoughts? David

What did your Zope server do in 2004?

I was looking at stats this morning for my Zope installation and thought it would be fun to share with others what you are running and how many hits your Zope server did this year (not counting the last 3 days of course). Pages: 4,025,657 Hits: 21,783,750 Bandwidth: 68.27 GB Hardware: AMD 2.133, 1.5 GB RAM, RAID 1 w/ 2 x 36GB SCSI Zope: 2.7b4, CMF 1.4, Plone 2.0 and many products That is almost 30% more than I did last year. find ZClasses instances

Hi, I get to a setup where ZClasses could still be used : one ZClass is installed in one of the product. I need to find out if there are any instance of the ZClass in the ZODB in order to migrate them to sthing saner. I have tried to use the manage_findResult method, passing it the ZClass name as meta_type. I got no result. But I am not sure the ZClass name is its meta_type. Help with Zope Python result object please!

hello, I have a python code that recieves two result objects from two different ZSQL methods. I need to join them (sort of like UNION). I can't do result1+result2, otherwise it raises an exception that the + operator isn't supported. When I try to do this (read below, I explained what i've done if you are lazy to read the code) result1 = context.zsqlmethod1() result2 = context.zsqlmethod2() if (len(result1) == 0): return result2 row1 = 0 row2 = len(result1) + 1 col = 0 for r in result2: col = 0 if (context.duplicateExists(result1, result2[row1][0]) == -1): result1[row2][col] = result2[row][col] col = col + 1 row1 = row1 + 1 row2 = row2 + 1 return result1 Basically, it loops through the rows and columns of result2 and adds them to the end of the result 1. However it for some reason raises "index out of range" and says that assigning result1[0][0]=result2[0][0] (if there is an element in both of them) is illegal because: Error Value: object does not support item or slice assignment I realize that in most programming languages you can't add them to result1 without resizing it first, but I can't find much documentaiton on member functions of the result object, so I can't resize it. I am completely stuck, I've tried everything, spent so much time on it, can anyone please help save my sanity :P Thanks in advance guys! What's limiting my file uploads?

I have a very simple form on my site: <table summary="Test form"> <form action ="receive997" enctype="multipart/form-data" method="post"> <tr><td><b>Username</b></td><td><input type="text" name="username" size="16"></td></tr> <tr><td><b>Password</b></td><td><input type="text" name="password" size="16"></td></tr> <tr><td><b>File</b></td><td><input type="file" name="contents" size="30" accept="*/*"></td></tr> <tr><td></td><td><input type="submit" value="Upload"></td></tr> </form> </table> It posts to a trivial Python script: request = container.REQUEST return request For testing purposes, the contents of "username" and "password" are six bytes long. As long as the file specified in "contents" is short (7843 bytes or less), the "form section of the formatted request object looks like: form username 'something' password '<password obscured>' contents <ZPublisher.HTTPRequest.FileUpload instance at 0x91307ec> cookies ... As soon as the length of the submission crosses the 7843 byte barrier, though, it becomes empty: form cookies ... I can't figure out what's going on. In zope.conf, "cgi-maxlen" is unset (and therefore should default to zero). "http-header-max-length" defaults to 8192, which is pretty close to 7843 plus a little overhead, but the problem remained even after I increased that value to 32768. Any idea why Zope seems to be limiting my file upload size to this script to just under 8KB? -- Kirk Strauser The Day Companies

Zope LDAP connection

Hi! Is there any product that features LDAP connections in Zope. Just like ZMySQLDA for MySQL databases (not a user folder). In a fast search, I found ZopeLDAP, but it was last released in 2000. Is there someone working on ldap+zope "low level" stuff? Thanks a lot, Ricardo Alves

DateTime().Time() gets Insufficient Privileges error, why?

I am trying to get the latest time in a Python Script. I declare: from DateTime.DateTime import DateTime But when I run: t = DateTime().latestTime() or t = DateTime().Time() I always get an Insufficient Privileges error. I have combed through the archives and the web and as far as I can tell this should work. What am I doing wrong? Thanks! Jamie
