I just picked up an extensive summary of the current state of the Fedora
Project / Foundation on LWN:

  http://lwn.net/Articles/178518/

I found it interesting, by distinction with ZF, that because FF has no
copyright to defend, they essentially have no reason to exist, apart
from the project. They had originally intended to create a "patent
commons," but have ceded that space to the Open Innovation folks.

Perhaps more relevant: creating the foundation as a 501(c)3 public
charity (under US tax law) would have actaully *prevented* Red Hat from
spending as much on Fedora as they intend. The requirements for "public
funding" (1/3 after four years) would have been staggeringly high, given
the amounts RH currently spends to support Fedora.
