[ZODB-Dev] can't get zeo up to run

Some where inbetween kind of long and very long. I think.

    zeod -f /usr/local/etc/zeo.conf   

Gives same crap as 
    /etc/rc.d/init.d/zeo start

So does
    python /usr/lib/python1.5/site-packages/ZEO/start.py  -u root -h localhost -p 1975 

I don't understand how to set the -S option on this command. Could that be my problem?
Or the fact that I have not assigned INSTANCE_HOME environment variable a value.
