Hmm, it looks like BTrees currently ignore exceptions raised by the
default comparison function, because the BTree TEST_KEY macro has no
way of reporting an error.

The patch at http://collector.zope.org/Zope/231 seems to fix it; I
will continue looking at the unicode issues tomorrow...... Im sure
this means my original analysis of the unicode problem was flawed.
