I managed to connect -- the connection is *very* hard to debug given
that the client just hangs!

On the first run, I can't even get past the *first* commit :-(  Doesn't
this happen with you, starting with a pristine database?

Only difference from your script is that I use realms.

The next time I run, I stop at the same point as you. I haven't yet the
logfile ready, and I'm about to skip out for lunch, but I confirm your
problem. 

It seems related to the original bug I reported. I'm trying with
ZODB3.2c1. 

This happens both running from the *same* host (via hostname and via
loopback) and from a remote host.

I'll try digging up some more info here -- in the meantime, let me know
if anything else comes up. 

I still think noone is using authentication out in the wild :-(
