That technique is exactly the way HowTos are being implemented on
the new, CMF-based zope.org site.

On the dogbowl, e could establish a topic which searched for Documents
with the DublinCore.Subject of "howto", and that would work as well.
In fact, I like the idea so much that I have just added it:  see

   http://cmf.zope.org/doc/how_tos

Adding a portal_type doesn't help much for existing content, unless
we surface a method which rebinds the content from its current type
to the new one.
