I bet it's the security checks being invoked a lot.  It would be 
interesting to temporarily disable security altogether and see what the 
results are.

Note that you should use the CMF trunk, soon to be CMF 1.3, to perform 
these tests, since it has some performance improvements (especially CMF 
startup time).
