I would not care about backward compatibility. If you create a new CMF site 
DateIndexes should be used.
If people have older side they can update their catalog manually (which is 
a 3 minute job). So changing
the index definitions in enumerateIndexes() should not interfer with 
existing site. From my own experience
index can just be recreated without any side effects making most users 
*very happy* (20 seconds -> some
milliiseconds for a query is a big win).
