The Plone people are much more open to integrate third party solutions
(a good thing in principle). But, they have only limited control
over third party solutions. Therefore, they changed their CMF version
to give third parties more time to adapt to a more Zope 3 style
of doing things (e.g. accessing request only on code paths specifically
designed for request processing).

Note, that not everybody finds a more Zope 3 style of doing a worth
in itself -- with corresponding reluctance to change something just
for this purpose.
