Have not tried for some time, but have had good luck with Interbase/Firebird 
(http://www.ibphoenix.com/) used with Zope on Win 98 in the past.  Plan to 
check it out again in near future (now that I've reloaded Win after the 
Blue-Screen-of-Death struck).

Firebird on Linux looks good, but need to check how its current version is 
doing on Windows.  Advantage for you may be that a variation of a simple 
backup-restore cycle would allow you to move the database from Win 98 to a 
Linux box later.  This is what I need to confirm for myself.  Definitely 
worth checking out.
