What encoding does your page declare itself in?
(eg, <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; 
charset=iso-8859-1">) in plain old html, or <?xml version="1.0" 
encoding="ISO8859-1"?> in xhtml)

The best solution being to throw away "national encodings" and use Unicode..
