In what way did it not work ?

Maybe it is _not_ an "Easy DTML question" but instead a "Tricky Sendmail
Issue" ?

does it work when you use a fixed string, like

 <!--#sendmail mailhost=MailHost
   mailfrom=sender
   mailto="'smtp:someone@somewhere.net'" -->
