What version of Zope are you using? I know of two separate problems that 
cause the aforementioned problems, both fixed in the latest release.

The first was a bug in the batch-code of the in tag that became visible in 
Zope 2 running on Python 1.5.2, causing batch sizes to be miscalculated. 
This was fixed in 2.0a3.

The second is a misassumption that any output from a DTML method or 
document that contains non 7-bit characters is binairy. This has been fixed 
in 2.0b2.
