[Zope] manage_edit

hi out there!

got this problem:

i got a variable (whichone) with the contents "1999-02-18".
i created a dtml-document with:
<dtml-call "manage_addDTMLDocument(_['whichone'])"> which worked fine...

but:
how can i change the content of the document with manage_edit (i want to
write a list to the object)

tried:
<dtml-call "REQUEST.set('list', [])">
<dtml-call "list.append(1)"> 
<dtml-call "manage_addDTMLDocument(_['whichone'])"> 
<dtml-call "manage_edit(list, 'xx')"> 

failed!!

what have i done wrong??
