I don't have much time to fully explain, but Tom Deprez wrote a tutorial on 
(amongst others) the tree navigation I wrote for ZBook, available at 
ZDP:   http://zdp.zope.org/ZBook/
ZBook is displayed using a tree whose state is persistent across pages.
