Whether or not you are fans of Flash, IMHO the writing is on the wall for
something like it.

SVG
For example see the maturing SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) draft at W3C:

http://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/

and the Concordia web site:

http://indy.cs.concordia.ca/svg/main.html

I read this as a response to the 3 main submission they received:
1) Microsoft
2) Adobe PGML
3) Macromedia openSWF

Microssft just 'get' graphics...but htey are trying
Adobe focused on leveraging their document layout approach PDF_XML_WEB
Macromdedia plough ahead with traubng to gain maximum eyeballs (77 million
players+ downloaded) and a _highly_compressed format with strong
interactivity, sound and straeming built-in.

Macromedia has the clear edge in performance and installed platform
userbase at present

...but things could change rapidly especially if such a multimedia ssytem
coudl be dveloped with a more flexible web object model, XML, openSource
(ahem-: sound familiar?)...

"SVG is a language for describing two-dimensional vector and mixed
vector/raster graphics in XML. SVG is designed to work well across
platforms, output resolutions, colour spaces, and a range of available
bandwidths."

I am happy to note from the updated SVG page, that it looks like a good
harvest this year :-)
Lots of SVG related developments including:

Chris Lilley's talk 'XML meets Graphicss'

http://www.w3.org/Talks/1999/09/14-SVG-XMLWorld/slide1.htm

Sketch, an illustration program for Unix-like systems ( Linux, Solaris,
BSD, AIX, IRIX) by Bernhard Herzog has SVG import and export support in
version 0.62. Sketch is written in Python.

XHTML WITH MATHML AND SVG

.... so where the Zope?
