Have you seen webunit?
Its written by Steve Purcell (same guy who wrote pyunit)
and is available at http://webunit.sourceforge.net/

This plus sgmllib/pyxml libraries (to analyze the html code returned) 
can probably the basis for web-based user interface unit tests.
