Whatever you're using for the download is renaming the file.  Just rename
it to change .gz to .tgz and use 'tar xzf' to decompress the file.

For the rpm package, likely the executable and start script have been
placed in /usr/bin and there is probably an init script in
/etc/rc.d/init.d.
