sure you can get largefiles!
Your OS should be OK if you have glibc >= 2.2.0
and kernel >= 2.4.0

All you need then is to compile python 2.1.3 from source
with largefile support. Instructions here:
http://www.python.org/doc/2.1.3/lib/posix-large-files.html

Also it's a good idea to test your new installation...

cd /path/to/your/python/libs/test
python2.1 test_largefile.py

ah, I misunderstood. Odd symptom, but it can't be a coincidence...
fix the 2GB problem and see if this goes away.
