What if you change :

   <updated tal:content="python:obj.modified().HTML4()">2000-01-01T12:00+00:00</updated>

to :

   <updated tal:content="python:obj.modified.HTML4()">2000-01-01T12:00+00:00</updated>

?

(just a guess, because it says that obj.modified already is a DateTime 
instance)
