It looks to me like Gary meant "2.2.x for x >= 1".  That's not the
CVS head but the last maintenance/bugfix release for 2.2 (2.2.1 was
released back in April).

No, the CVS head is informally called 2.3 (or 2.3 alpha 0).  I think
it's better to require 2.2.1 and try to make sure that the code works
with both that and the head of CVS.
