...having spent two years fighting the magic behind names such as manage_, I
don't think so.

I don't think an alternative is needed. I see no reasons why all methods
shouldn't be command'able.

That said, should restrictions be needed, I'd much prefer to see something along
the lines of Zope's declarative security mechanism.
