I know this is an argument one cannot win (I'm not even sure if you're
not being facetious), but (a) that never stopped all the other XML
dialects from having "ML" in their name, (b) following this reasoning
the "M" in XML shouldn't be there either, (c) it depends on how you
define "markup": if you think of "markup" as "inserting markers in
text" I think it's a defensible use.
