Sorry to come in late on the thread, this all looks fascinating!

My little 2p: I'd really like the querying to _always_ work and just be slow 
without indexes.

*waves hands furiously*
Then there'd be some tool that would let you optimise the queries you end up 
using after development is finished and suggest where and how to add indexes 
such that your new app scales with a big data load
