Because the site designer chose to make it do so. Zeldman is a talented 
guy, but he's also a very visually oriented designer, and enjoys graphic 
elements. He could have managed those overlapping issues in a different 
way, but didn't do it. This is not a problem in IE, btw.

You can control this with the min-width and overflow CSS properties to 
respectively limit the minimum width the column can get, or cause it to get 
a horizontal scrollbar when the content is too big to fit the window size.
