        Working within the distutils framework should allow us to
        support whatever distutils is willing to support, without
        having to worry directly about specific platforms.  Our
        experience so far is that we deploy software that's as
        isolated from the rest of the system as possible; so deploying
        via the host platform's packaging system shouldn't be a
        priority.
