Jeremy Hylton saw that failure often last December and this January. 
IIRC, he eventually traced it to stale code left behind in a
site-packages directory he may or may not have been picking up
unintentionally.  Fred Drake tried mightly at the time to reproduce
it, but couldn't.  FWIW.
