Can we just make DisplayWidget clever enough to handle your use case?
Probably that just means borrowing the code from the standard edit
widgets for extracting the form value.  I'm not sure I understand the
"hidden" part:  do you want the widget to display the value and then
pass the original value back in?  If so, you could just use an
EditWidget in its disabled / read-only mode.
