I don't find anything involving ZConfig schemas to be easy.

In any case, I don't expect Paste Deploy to adopt ZConfig anytime soon.
Ditto for setuptools/distutils.

Similarly, I might want to be able to use config files for the Zope test
runner.  I don't want to depend on ZCondig for this.

You haven't responded to my desire to use a single configuration file
for multiple applications.  Perhaps because you don't consider this
to be important, which is understandable.  I do consider this to be
important though.
