I too think something like this would be a good thing to have as standard. 
Just thought that anyone might be interested, I stumbled over another package 
that tries to deal with i18n of content objects. Did not look very much into 
it, but if I'm not totally wrong it is constructed as an adapter, leaving the 
original schema untouched.
