Thats not an issue, but a hint, since I don't know if you know about this feature. In the last implementation phil added relative navigation to the tree. you can do this by assigning negative values to the level property.
for detail ask zwork in #plone or mail to phil at bluedynaics.org.
example can be seen at http://www.governor.state.tx.us/divisions/stategrants for example. This seems to bring more overview combined with good performance
