That's the same conclusion I arrived to after a few months of usage of Page 
Templates.

I see it as a 3D graphics model: Python Scripts are the wireframes, the 
skeleton holding it together, and the Page Templates are the nice textures.

You cannot really touch the textures, you just interact with the underlying 
mesh of triangles.
