I haven't tried to mix the two.

It's hard to mix ZODB 3.1 and Zope 2.5, because the C layout of
Persistent objects changed between those releases.  It may be possible
to re-compile all your C extensions against the ZODB 3.1 headers, but
I'd be nervous about compatibility.
