Python *does* have first-class regex objects, though Perl 5 doesn't
(that I'm aware of).  Perl does provide language-level *syntax* for
regexen, which Python does not; I suspect this is what you're
referring to.

As for braces, say that too many times and my long-awaited "braces
patch" goes in!  ;-)
